OUTDOORS

Outdoors classes are taught to provide students with new experiences and an appreciation for nature.  The curriculum is divided by land and sea, Aquatics and Camping.

AQUATICS AND SEAMANSHIP

The Aquatics and Seamanship provide opportunity for students to experience aquatic activities with safe and proper boating, canoeing, and rafting experiences. All aquatic activities are led by certified life guards. Instructions by certified canoe instructors are given with day and overnight canoe trips. Whitewater rafting is taught and an annual Whitewater Challenge is held in September for all the AMI programs. PWI has held first place in the Challenge on several occasions.

CAMPING AND BACKPACKING

Camping and Backpacking is an important part of the philosphy of PWI. This cirriculum provides the student with alternative forms of activies not experienced before. Students from the inner city take on a completely different attitude when in the "wilderness" without the modern conveniences of the city. The backpacking cirriculum provides for physical fitness as well as self-esteem in completing endurance activities. The beautiful mountains of upstate South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia are excellent sites for both activities. The Appalachian Trail, beginning in Northwest Georgia, is utilizied as the culmination of the Backpacking experience.
