Education at AMIkids
Piedmont is not
quiet what you would see in a typical public school in South Carolina.
Our class sizes are much smaller compared to public school classrooms.
Our student to teacher ratio is no greater than 10:1. This small ratio allows for
much needed one on one attention from the teacher. Not only is one
on one instruction emphasized, but cooperative learning groups,
experiential education, and discovery learning are emphasized as well.
We believe all students do not learn through the same modality, so
we have students take a learning style inventory in order for our teachers
to know how each student learns most effectively. You will see
students having fun while learning at the same time. Students use the electronic game Jeopardy! to review for a test, students will do
an internet scavenger hunt about African-American history, or learn
about animal habitats by actually creating habitats for the animals.
AMIkids Piedmont receives Title 1 funds through the Department of Juvenile Justice
School District. This allows us to enhance and extend our math,
English, and transition classes. We attempt to incorporate
technology as much as we can in our classrooms. In addition to core
subjects being taught by highly qualified teachers, we also have a GED
and Career Awareness instructor. All students attend GED and
Career Awareness class during the school day. Each month a PreGED
test is given to students, if a student passes the test, he is scheduled
to take the GED exam as soon as possible. Students who do not
pass the test are placed on an individual study plan in the area in
which they need improvement. In the Career Awareness class, students use
the South Carolina Personal Pathways to Success Career Inventory in
order to identify possible career options. Students learn how to
create a resume, how to interview, and of employer and employee work
dynamics. Upon entry into the program, all students are pre-tested
using the Woodcock McGrew Werder Mini Battery of Achievement. This
assessment provides the academic staff with a grade level equivalency in
reading, writing, and mathematics. Most of our students test below
grade level, so it is crucial that we form a firm foundation of the
core skills in each subject so that students can build upon that
foundation and have success in higher learning. We
believe our students improve academically due to our dedicated teachers,
our learning
environment, and our desire to help students excel in their academics.
