A mind once stretched by a new
idea never regains its original dimensions.”
This quote summarizes what we are doing at AMIkids Piedmont with our students.
We are teaching our students to modify, not manage their behavior.
This means that we are not simply teaching our students what not to do,
but we are teaching them the positive behaviors they should display.
Vital values of living a positive and successful life are instilled into
the lives of our students. Positive reinforcement is used through
a point system in which students are rewarded for positive
behaviors and held accountable for negative behaviors. A
token economy is used to reward students for displaying positive
behaviors they do not typically display. Students use these
points and tokens to buy items during bids. During
these bids students pay purchase snacks, hygiene products, meals from
fast food restaurants, or additional time on the phone. In order to
complete the program, students must progress through a system of ranks.
Students earn their ranks by obtaining cards, via the point system,
reciting the rules, and meeting requirements from the Behavior
Modification, Treatment, and Education components. Students go
before a Rank Board and explain why they deserve their rank.
The
value of giving back to the communities is taught to our students. Students do community
service projects such as Meals on Wheels, enhancing the local YMCA, and
any other projects that the community needs help with. Students
learn how to work cooperatively on a team through recreational therapy.
AMIkids Piedmont uses these tools and processes to teach our students that they can
be successful in life and become positive citizens in their community.
